January 11, 2018: Postcards were written to the Chairmen who have House Bill 1410 and Senate Bill 613 under their Committees. These bills both have the same wording to protect the LGBTQ community statewide from discrimination in housing, workplace and public accommodations. HB-1410 and SB-613 are simply amendments which would include the LGBTQ Community in the already existing PA Human Relations Act written in 1955.
Three of the LGBTQA Committee members met with Senator Mike Folmer on Thursday, January 11th. We hand delivered the postcards directly to him. The Senator met with us for over an hour. We had much spirited conversation over the issue itself and the politics surrounding it. Senator Folmer promised us that he would touch base with Senator Pat Browne (R) (co-sponsor of SB-613) to receive an update on any amendments to the bill. Folmer also committed to reporting back to us. He did call us back January 24th to say that he is going to be very busy these next few months with the redrawing of the district maps, but that he did speak with Senator Browne and he intends to have SB-613 come to the floor for a vote this Spring. Senator Folmer said that he is our friend getting this bill taken care of in the Senate. Time will tell, but we are hopeful.
If you know anyone in other Districts who want to support SB-613 NOW would be a really good time to encourage them to contact their Senators saying something like…
…“Senator Mike Folmer has promised Hershey Indivisible his intention to bring SB-613 (amendment to the Human Relations Act regarding anti-discrimination for LGBTQ community) to the floor for a vote sometime this Spring. We are asking you to vote in favor of this bill”
If they have a small group willing to meet with their Senator, they should bring all of their resources/stories/information and have a congenial meeting.
